How it works
The ANC is the number of infection-fighting neutrophils circulating, not just the percentage. It counts the mature neutrophils (segs) plus the immature ones already released (bands): ANC = WBC × (% segs + % bands) ÷ 100.
A patient can have a near-normal WBC but a dangerously low ANC if neutrophils make up a small share of it — which is why the ANC, not the WBC, drives neutropenic precautions. ANC is most watched during the chemotherapy nadir (the low point, usually 7–14 days after a cycle).
